Monsanto case

CASE – The case for this term is:  Case 1:Monsanto, p. 382 (Ferrell, 2017, p.382).

.

This is the case that you will use for all of your Journal links, which you then edit and compile, to become your Final Paper.

.

All documents are located in:  The “Syllabus, Calendar, Rubrics” link in the left course navigation area.  The Rubric is essential, and will guide you through each Journal entry.  Note that this case is also included in the previous edition of the Ferrell text.

.

Instructions:  Click on the Journals link, and post your Journal entry for this week.  After you post each week, I will comment with feedback. Then you will edit and compile these, which will become your Final Paper.

Sections 1 and 2 are due this week.  There are five sections in total, which you will compile into your final paper.  Be sure to use the numbers, for clarity and grading.

1.0: Describe the Facts, Stakeholders and Issues of this case. (3 paragraphs, one for each)

Facts –  Generally, it is good to start with the year of the founding of the company, their key areas of business/milestones, and the facts that led to the unethical/illegal behaviors.  You may need to use the company’s website for a source, if this information is not in the case.

Stakeholders/stakeholder groups – For a good analysis, use 4-5 key stakeholders.  See the chart on p.34 for guidance (Ferrell, 2015).  List the Stakeholders, discussing briefly their interests and concerns in the actions of the company. Begin with language such as, “The stakeholders in this case are ….”  Good business writing is clear and direct!

Issues – For these analyses, issues are the illegal and/or unethical problems that the company is having and/or has had.  List and discuss 2-4 issues/problems.  For guidance, see pp.63-84 (Ferrell, 2015).  “The issues in this case are….”

.

2.1: Discuss how the ethical issues in the case may cause legal problems. (1 paragraph)

2.2: Discuss how the ethical issues in the case may be perceived by the community (with factors such as reputation). (1 paragraph)

2.3: Describe what steps/actions the company and/or individuals could consider to remedy the situation (public relations, internal changes, etc.). (1 paragraph)

List 2-4 steps/actions, and number them, since you will use these later in the paper.  “Step 1 is…” ” Step 2 is,” etc.  Business writing is very clear and direct.

2.4: Discuss the pros and cons of each step/action from Section 2.3. (1 paragraph)

List and discuss pros and cons for each of your numbered steps from Section 2.3, above.

I will grade your journal using the appropriate section of the case analysis rubric, located in the “Syllabus, Calendar, Rubric” link, and will provide feedback that you can then use to edit for your final paper.  Note that the lengths are minimums, and can be exceeded.  Each of the two sections is worth 30pts.

This week, Sections 3 and 4 are due to your Week 5 Journal.  Remember to use the numbers in your journals (and final paper), for clarity and grading.

Please write

3.1: Discuss how the Issues in the case impact individual employee issues, such as morale, commitment and conduct (1 paragraph).  Check the Index for employee commitment, etc., and online for employee morale (note that morale is different than morals–be careful not to confuse them!).

3.2: Discuss how the Issues in the case affect the corporate culture (1 paragraph).  Be specific.  What is corporate culture, what type of corporate culture does the organization have, and which issues relate directly to corporate culture?  See pp.186-190 for helpful information!

3.3: Discuss what steps/actions management could consider to remedy the situation (for example, leadership, training, codes of conduct etc. Use the charts in Chapters 7 & 8, for guidance). (1 paragraph)

As with Section 2, list 2-4 steps/actions, and list each specifically.  Remember to write clearly and directly, such as, “Step 1 is for the company to….”  “Step 2 is….” This will help you later in the paper.

3.4: List and discuss the pros and cons of each step/action you identified. (1 paragraph)

4.1: Choose three ethical and moral philosophies from Chapter 6 that could have helped the company to avoid its unethical behaviors, or could help the company in going forward.  Define each (with citation) and discuss how each of these three systems would impact each of your Issues from your Section 1.  Be specific.  Go back and read the feedback for Section 1–in case editing your issues can help you to earn a higher score. (3 paragraphs.) Please use: Utilitarian, Relativism and virtue ethic if necessary

4.2: Choose one of the three ethical philosophies from 4.1 that could have prevented the issues, and/or would help the company in moving forward ( please choose virtue ethic).  Provide full explanation why this was chosen and is best (para.1).  Provide full explanation on why the other two philosophies were not chosen (para.2). Discuss your Stakeholders, from your Section 1, in relationship with the chosen philosophy (para.3). (3 paragraphs.)

I will grade your journal using the case analysis rubric and provide feedback and comments to help you improve your final paper.  Note that for the journal, each section is worth 30pts, but for the paper, Section 4 is worth quite a lot of points (see the Rubric), and is worth spending more effort either here or when compiling the paper.  Let me know if you have questions. your Stakeholders, from your Section 1, in relationship with the chosen philosophy (para.3). Post the following information in your Journal by Day 5, or earlier, so that there is enough time for feedback, to use in your final paper:

5.1: Using the ethical and moral belief system that you selected in 4.2 as the framework for your decision, explain which of the steps and actions you identified and discussed in 2.3 and 2.4 you believe would be most appropriate for the company to implement. Explain your reasons. (1 paragraph)

5.2: Using the ethical and moral belief system that you selected in 4.2 as the framework for your decision, explain which of the steps and actions identified and discussed in 3.3 & 3.4 you believe would be most appropriate for the company to implement. Explain your reasons. (1 paragraph)

5.3: Improvements, Timeline and Monitoring – Discuss the improvements that a company would expect to see from the selected steps/actions in 5.1 and 5.2, identify a timeline for implementation, and explain how you would monitor their effectiveness. (2-3 paragraphs)

Your instructor will grade your journal using the appropriate section of the case analysis rubric and provide feedback and comments to help you improve your final paper. Be sure to think carefully about the feedback you are given and how you will adjust your final paper.

Note that the lengths are minimums and can be exceeded.  For 5.3, it is important to include a timeline for implementation, and to use the information in the charts in the textbook in Chapters 8 and 9.
